What is tech sales?
Updated September 2026. We revised this early re:WORK explainer so the role descriptions and expectations are useful today.
Tech sales is work that helps organizations understand, buy, and use technology products or services. Roles can include business development, account management, solutions consulting, customer success, and sales leadership. The daily work varies widely by company and product.
The work begins with understanding
Good sales work includes learning a customer’s needs, asking useful questions, explaining a solution accurately, and following through. Some roles focus on starting conversations; others manage later stages or long-term accounts.
Different roles require different strengths
Business development may emphasize research and outreach. Account executives may guide evaluation and commercial decisions. Customer success teams may focus on adoption and renewal. Job titles are imperfect; read the actual duties.
Learning is part of the job
Technology, products, and markets change. Employers may provide training, but candidates should ask what support, coaching, and performance expectations are in place.
Evaluate the whole opportunity
Consider compensation structure, quota, manager support, product quality, schedule, ethical fit, and room to grow. A high advertised earning potential is not a guarantee of earnings.
Put it into practice: Talk with one person in a role that interests you and ask what an ordinary week looks like.
