Employer and role research

Identify relevant companies, roles, and people so your job-search effort has a clear direction. Good research helps you make better decisions and begin better conversations.

What this skill helps you do

Turn a broad search into informed choices.

Research is more than collecting company names. It helps you understand what a role requires, where your experience may be relevant, and who can help you learn what the public job description leaves out.

1

Read the role

Separate core responsibilities from preferences and identify the evidence an employer is likely to value.

2

Understand the company

Learn how the organization creates value, what may be changing, and where the role fits.

3

Map relevant people

Identify professionals who can offer context—not just people who can give you a referral.

A practical framework

Role. Company. People.

Use three research layers before deciding how much time to invest in an opportunity.

Role

Study responsibilities, repeated requirements, success measures, and language used across similar openings.

Company

Review the organization’s work, customers, priorities, recent developments, and credible public sources.

People

Find employees, alumni, peers, and leaders whose experience can deepen your understanding of the work.

Practice the skill

Create a one-page target brief.

Choose one role at one employer and summarize only the information that can guide your next action.

Capture: the role’s top needs, three facts about the company, two questions you still have, and three people who may offer relevant perspective.

Example: A target brief may show that a customer-success role values onboarding, account communication, and retention. Connect those needs to examples from your experience and ask better questions.
Keep it grounded. Use public, professional information appropriately. Research should prepare you for respectful outreach, not invade anyone’s privacy.

From activity to social capital

Research makes relationship-building more relevant.

Social capital grows through trusted professional relationships. Preparation helps you approach people with context, curiosity, and respect instead of sending a generic request for access.

Common questions

Research with focus and good judgment.

How many companies should I target?

Begin with a manageable group you can research well. Expand or narrow the list as your evidence improves.

Should I apply before speaking with someone?

You can. A relationship or referral is not required to apply. Conversations may add context, but should not delay a strong application.

What if I do not meet every qualification?

Distinguish core requirements from preferences. Use evidence to evaluate your fit.

Can AI do the research for me?

AI can help organize public information, but verify every important claim with current, reliable sources.

Continue the learning path

Turn research into responsible preparation.

Once you understand a target role and employer, AI can support preparation—if you give it good context and check the output.

Your next move

Research the opportunity. Then choose your move.
